In 2022, international medical graduates (IMGs) made up more than 35% of all Alberta physicians. On their pathway to practice, IMGs are assessed by CPSA to ensure they meet the standards expected of physicians in Canada.

CPSA and our partners across the health system and within communities work to ensure physicians have the competencies, tools and supports they need to get through the Practice Readiness Assessment process and, ultimately, settle into their new community.

We recently spoke with a PRA assessor, and two physicians who underwent their two-part PRAs in 2022 about the program and how IMGs play a crucial role in helping improve access to community-based health care across Alberta.

Read about how internationally-trained physicians are improving access to quality care in Alberta communities.
